My Biography

My name is Nicki Pike and I am a junior at the University of Texas at Austin. This web page is part of an assignment for my Topics in Writing class, which has spent the semester discussing different aspects of Generation X (New Generation). Inorder to give you a better idea about who I am I feel that there are a couple of things you should know about me. The first, and most exciting thing going on in my life right now, is the planning of my wedding. Though it is still a year away, getting ideas is always exciting. The other thing, and the one that will be most important when looking at this site, is to know that I do not write about eating disorders from the standpoint of mere research. For the past 5 years I have dealt with anorexia nervosa. Though things are much better, they have not been that way for very long. My battle with anorexia began toward the end of my freshman year in high school, but really exhibited itself in my sophomore year. For the duration of my sophomore year in high school, I was in and out of doctor's offices, seeing a psychologist, and going to group meetings. In October of my junior year I was hospitalized, which disrupted my academic classes drastically. Upon going back to my high school, I had to drop out of the honors classes that I was in, and go into regular classes. Not only was this devastating to me as a person who deeply valued academics and grades, but I was no longer in classes with any of my friends. I did manage to make it through high school, though it was a struggle, and went on to college. I first attended college at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, but after only eight weeks, I had to withdraw. I stayed out of school for the remainder of the semester, then picked up in January at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas (my home town). After much effort, I have finally made it to UT, where my fiance has been for the past two years. As I have mentioned, I am doing much better as far as dealing with my eating disorder, but I do realize that it is still a daily struggle.
